Anyone familiar with FIMO clay?
I’m trying to make some themed decorations for a fish tank using Fimo Polymer clay, and a few things I want to know before I put them in my tank are: Do they discolor, do they keep their shape (or disintegrate?), and how they generally do around water (absorption, give off coloring, etc?) . I would of course test it prior to actually adding it to my fish tank, but I don’t want to waste my time is someone can tell me it’s a bad idea from the start…
It’s not a good idea, but not because baked polymer clay will crumble or fall apart –it won’t. It’s just that it’s plastic, and if it’s not thoroughly cured all the way to the center, it could eventually “leach” out some of the raw plasticizer into the water which might not be good for the health of fish… particularly small ones.
On the other hand, ordinary baked polymer clay can be submerged in water for long periods without any problems at all (without fish, or perhaps in ponds where there’s *lots* of water to dilute any effect).
Polymer clay is waterproof for all intents and purposes, but after 6 months or so the darker colors could begin to show some evidence of absorption making the surface look a little whitish… it will dry out though if taken out of water. It’s possible that a *marine* polyurethane or an epoxy resin could keep the water away from the clay even with a long period of submersion, but the jury’s out on that (and of course, they’re both plastics too).
(The pieces would will definitely keep their shape though since polymer clay is oil-based, not water-based, so can’t be “dissolved” by water.)
